The design chosen was by the Australian designer Bruce Roberts and was his 39? Spray. The original design was modified by having an additional 5ft added to the length. This was accomplished by adding 2 additional frames to the centre of the vessel. The deck was raised 4 ins, thereby adding greater head room. 2 large ?Skylight? hatches were installed and the stern was rounded to make a ?steamer stern?. The chine at the water entry was rounded. Stainless steel rub rails are installed port and starboard and in 2001 the bow was modified and the bowsprit eliminated. The new closed-in Bow keeps the foredeck quite dry. Other changes to the original Roberts design include integral Port and Starboard fuel tanks 90imperial gallons each. 2 additional tanks of fifty gallons each supply freshwater (Port) and holding tank requirements (Starboard). Her interior was professionally finished by a cabinet-maker in Sudbury using local materials. When you enter her main salon from the cockpit, you will find her interior styling feeling very similar to a traditional European canalboat. You will also gain a sense of impressive openness and hominess. Swiftsure was originally rigged as a gaff-rigged cutter complete with topmast. As a consequence, seventeen Andersen winches were installed. The rig, although very pretty, was difficult to sail short-handed and was subsequently changed to a conventional Bermuda rig. The deck-stepped mast has a substantial profile which suits the boat visually. It is short at forty feet though the boom is twenty feet long.
